Newly Published Paper - Dr. Brie Williams
Oct 24, 2014 Brie Williams, MD, MS; Cyrus Ahalt, MPP; Irena Stijacic Cenzer, MA; Alexander K. Smith, MD, MS, MPH; Joe Goldenson, MD; and Christine S. Ritchie, MD published an article “Pain Behind Bars: The Epidemiology of Pain in Older Jail Inmates in a County Jail” in the Journal of Palliative Medicine (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25265035). They found that older jail inmates with severe frequent pain constituted a medically complex population with significantly higher rates of multimorbidity, functional impairment, recent fall(s), recent community acute care use and serious mental illness compared to those with less or no pain. The report of high rates of pain suggest that jails are an important site for assessing symptom burden and developing appropriate palliative care interventions.
