Jason Flatt, Brie Williams, Deborah Barnes, Joe Goldenson and Cyrus Ahalt Published an Article in the Journal Aging and Mental Health
Jul 11, 2016 Jason Flatt, PhD, MPH, Brie Williams, MD, MS , Deborah Barnes, PhD , and Cyrus Ahalt, MPP partnered with Joe Goldenson, MD of the San Francisco County Department of Public Health and Jail Health Services to publish “Post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and associated health and social vulnerabilities in older jail inmates” in the journal Aging and Mental Health. The study found that symptoms of PTSD are common among older adults cycling in and out of jail and associated with social and medical vulnerabilities including poor self-rated health, functional impairment, and distressing pain. These findings suggest that jail-based screening for post-traumatic stress disorder would help identify older adults whose health and criminal justice outcomes would benefit from enhanced mental health treatment and reentry planning.

The July and August 2015 issues won the Special Citation Award, presented to the editor(s) whose publication demonstrates an unusual concept, presentation, or other distinctive quality.

Upon learning of the award, Dr. Hyde commented: “The success of the two issues was due to a team effort, including the expert contributions from guest authors, excellent guidance from the CDA Journal staff, and the collaboration between Dr. Gregory and myself. We appreciate the opportunity afforded by the CDA Journal to raise the awareness of the oral health needs of older adults.” Dr. Gregory remarked: “It was a privilege to have been offered the opportunity to guest edit this edition of the CDA Journal. The two-part issue on Geriatric Dentistry described and offered possible solutions to challenges facing the aging demographic and the dental profession. Being awarded a Special Citation by the International College of Dentistry only underscores the importance of the oral health of the older adult patients we serve.”
