  Janice Schwartz, MD Co-Chairs The Pharamcotherapy in Older Adults with Cardiovascular Disease Conference and Chairs a Satellite Symposium
Mar 02, 2017 Janice Schwartz, MD Co-chaired the Pharmacotherapy in Older Adults with Cardiovascular Disease Conference on February 6-7, 2017 at the ACC Heart House in Washington, DC. The conference was co-sponsored by the NIA/ACC and AGS U13 grant (P.I. Michael Rich). Michael Steinman, MD, Sei Lee, MD, MAS , Christine Ritchie, MD, MSPH, FACP, FAAHPM, along with UCSF Travel Awardee, Timothy Anderson, MD, attended the conference.
Dr. Schwartz also chaired a Satellite Symposium on February 7, 2017, entitled: “Research Regarding Older People in Traditional and Non-traditional Sites -- Where, Who, & How”. The UCSF invited speaker was Dr. Christine Ritchie, who spoke on the Pros and Cons of HOME Care.
 


  Janice Schwartz, MD Publish Study in AAPS Journal and Chapter in Elsevier/Saunders Textbook
Mar 02, 2017 Janice Schwartz, MD co-published a study in the AAPS Journal entitled: “Pharmacokinetics and Saturable Absorption of Gabapentin in Nursing Home Elderly Patients”.
Dr. Schwartz also co-authored a chapter in the Elsevier/Saunders textbook by Bikle D and Gallagher C, Ed., entitled: “The free 25 (OH) D hypothesis, in Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinics of North America: Vitamin D”.

Mar 02, 2017 Janice Schwartz, MD’s Career Profile was published in the March 2017 Edition of the Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics Journal.
Dr. Schwartz was also selected to be part of the Heart Failure Research Co-Design Team--pSCANNER project (UCSD PCORI project).
 


  Melisa Wong, MD Awarded Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO Merit Award
Mar 06, 2017 Melisa Wong, MD was awarded a Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO Merit Award for her quality improvement work to improve documentation of surrogate decision makers in UCSF medical oncology clinics. Dr. Wong presented this Hematology/Oncology fellow-based QI initiative at the 2017 ASCO Quality Care Symposium on March 3rd.

Mar 06, 2017 Pei Chen, MD has been awarded Innovation Funding for 2017-2018 for her proposal entitled “Creating an Interprofessional Learning Community in Ambulatory Primary Care for Older Adults” by Tideswell, the Academy of Medical Educators Innovation Funding Program, and the UCSF Program for Interprofessional Practice and Education.

  Anne Suskind, MD, MS is Recipient of AGS 2017 Jeffrey H. Silverstein Memorial Award
Mar 07, 2017 Anne Suskind, MD, MS has been awarded the American Geriatrics Society 2017 Jeffrey H. Silverstein Memorial Award for Emerging Investigators in the Surgical and Related Medical Specialties that are Focused on the Care of Older Adults. This award recognizes emerging investigators in the surgical and related medical specialties whose research is focused on geriatrics aspects of their specialty and who are committed to a career in aging research. Anne was selected because of her outstanding research abstract, “Functional outcomes after “minor” urologic surgery among nursing home residents; a national study”, which reflects new and relevant research in geriatrics.

  US News & World Report Ranks UCSF Geriatrics #5 in Nation
Mar 14, 2017 The US News & World Report published its 2018 rankings of the nation's best medical schools for Geriatrics and UCSF Geriatrics is ranked #5. This is an increase from #6 in 2017 and from #9 in 2012 so we are definitely on an upward trajectory. The ranking system combines peer assessments (from deans and residency directors) with data such as NIH funding and student selectivity.   Daphne Lo, MD and Neil Zhang Will Present During the UCSF Education Showcase
Mar 15, 2017 Daphne Lo, MD and 4th Year Medical Student, Neil Zhang are giving two presentations during the UCSF Education Showcase on Monday, 3/20/2017. The UCSF Education Showcase is an annual event that features the scholarly work of UCSF students, residents, and faculty. Sponsored by the UCSF Center for Faculty Educators (CFE), and enhanced by visiting scholars, the event is filled with opportunities to see the variety and quality of the work our UCSF colleagues are engaged in throughout the year. Abstracts are peer-reviewed and selected for presentation.

Dr. Lo will be giving a 10-min plenary oral presentation on her masters thesis qualitative research on psychological safety on iPACT, an interprofessional inpatient internal medicine team at the SFVAMC. The session is from 8:30-10:30 AM on Monday, March 20. The presentation will be at Mission Hall, 1599 4th Street, UCSF Mission Bay.

Neil Zhang will be giving a 5-min mini-oral presentation on his program evaluation work on iPACT. The session is from 1:30-2:30 PM on Monday, March 20. The presentation will also be at Mission Hall, 1599 4th Street, UCSF Mission Bay.
 


  Drs. Byerly and Yukawa's Abstract Has Been Accepted for Oral Presentation at the AGS Annual Meeting
Mar 16, 2017 The abstract entitled “Development of an interprofessional skilled nursing facility based geriatrics elective” by Laura Byerly, MD and Michi Yukawa, MD, MPH was accepted for oral presentation during the Teachers Methods and Materials Swap at the American Geriatric Society Annual Meeting in May 2017. They describe the redesign and revision of the UCSF Geriatric Medicine elective, which now allows fourth year medical, pharmacy, and physical therapy students to collaboratively care for veterans at the SFVAMC Community Living Center. Interprofessional student teams evaluate patients and present their findings and recommendations during weekly interdisciplinary team meetings and Fall Focus rounds. Feedback from the IP students has been overwhelmingly positive. They enjoy both learning from, and teaching, each other during real patient encounters.
 


  Michi Yukawa, MD Selected to Join the UCSF School of Medicine Coaching Program
Mar 16, 2017 Michi Yukawa, MD, MPH was selected to be one of the medical student coaches in the UCSF School of Medicine Coaching Program. She will advise 5-6 first year medical students through system improvement projects as well as teach these early learners clinical skills. Most importantly, she will mentor and coach them throughout their 4 years of medical school education.
 


  Francesca Nicosia, Malena Spar, Mike Steinman, MD, and Rebecca Brown, MD, MPH’s Abstract Selected for Oral Presentation at the AGS Annual Meeting
Mar 20, 2017 Francesca Nicosia, Malena Spar, Michael Steinman, MD, and Rebecca Brown, MD, MPH’s abstract, entitled “Making function part of the conversation: Clinician perspectives on measuring functional status is primary care,” was selected for oral presentation in AGS’s new “Lightning Science” session. This session was organized by the AGS Research Committee and includes 9 top-rated research abstracts. The presentation will describe findings from an ongoing VA study focused on improving measurement of functional status in older adults attending primary care appointments, and using that information to improve patient functioning and quality of life.
 


  Drs. Lo, Eubank, Harper, Yukawa and O'Brien Are Selected as 2017 Recipients of The Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators Cooke Award for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
Mar 21, 2017 Daphne Lo, MD, Kathryn Eubank, MD, Mike Harper, MD, Michi Yukawa, MD, MPH, and Bridget O'Brien, PhD have been selected as 2017 Recipients of The Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators Cooke Award for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. This award is in recognition of their work in the submission of their abstract entitled: "Building Psychological Safety for Interprofessional Education on Inpatient Internal Medicine Teams" for UCSF Education Showcase 2017.

Established in 2007, the Cooke Award for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning recognizes outstanding scholarly works presented at Education Showcase. All submissions to Education Showcase were eligible for this award. Top-scoring projects were nominated for the award following a blinded peer review of all abstract submissions. Award winners were determined by the members of the Scholarship Committee.

The awards will be announced during Education Showcase at the conclusion of the plenary presentations, between 11:30-noon on Monday, March 20, in Mission Hall Room 1400 at Mission Bay.

Mar 22, 2017 Rebecca Sudore, MD won the best research abstracts at the 2017 AAHPM meeting for the following 2 research projects: Measuring Advance Care Planning: Optimizing the ACP Engagement Survey & A Patient-facing Advance Care Planning Website (PREPARE) Increases ACP Documentation & Engagement in an RCT of Diverse Older Primary Care Patients at a VA Medical Center
 


  Alex Smith, MD, MS, MPH Accept Deputy Editor position with JAGS
Mar 30, 2017 Alex Smith, MD, MS, MPH has accepted a Deputy Editor position with the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (JAGS). In addition to the usual role of managing manuscript submissions, Alex will play a leading role in new initiatives, working with Eric Widera to expand the social media footprint of JAGS. As a condition of employment, JAGS editor Bill Applegate removed the requirement that JAGS manuscripts use the third person tense.
