Getting Paid by Medicaid for Caring for a Family Member

CareYaya is not a traditional, licensed home-care agency but instead a way to connect local healthcare students with families who want extra care, supervision, or social interaction with their loved older adult. For only $15 per hour, they will connect families to vetted local healthcare students who can provide companionship, mobility support, feeding assistance, light toileting, and help with simple tasks around the house (weekends, evenings, and overnights at NO extra charge).

Caregiving 101 Training Program: 6 three-hour classes designed to help families and friends care for their loved ones at home who are living with serious illness. It features practical skills and strategies for family caregivers. It is taught by community professionals who volunteer their time. The course is free.

Family Caregiver Alliance
Resource center for families of brain impaired adults. Social workers can meet with you and provide information and referrals, respite programs (Camps for Caring 4 times a year for the brain impaired adult), financial assistance, retreats for caregivers, can help pay for short term counseling for the caregiver.

Community Tech Network (CTN)
CTN offers free online training to San Francisco residents who are 60 years of age or older and in possession of a working laptop or tablet. Digital Coaching provides one-on-one tutoring delivered remotely by a trained Instructor. Tutors are available in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Spanish. Virtual computer tutoring with AlwaysActive
AlwaysActive is offering virtual drop-in online computer class for elders with all different levels of technology familiarity. Elders can also have a one on one 30 minute appointment to receive tutoring about specific devices they want to learn, ie cell phones, ipads, etc.

Respite Care

Respite care is short term or temporary care of the sick or disabled for a few hours or weeks, designed to provide relief to the regular caregiver. Respite care can occur in your home, at special day-care centers, and in residential centers that offer overnight stays.
