Amy Byers, PhD, MPH will be presenting about Late Life Suicide Prevention and Interdisciplinary Care on Thursday, 9/10/20 from noon-1pm PST. Anyone can join, although only VA clinicians, faculty, trainees, and staff can get credit through TMS registering / CE credits.  This is the first in a series of talks so also see future topics and dates in the announcement below.

Overview: The purpose of the Meeting the Mental Health Needs of Aging Veterans: Promising Practices webinar series is to build and maintain awareness about promising models of geriatric mental health care among VHA inter-professional clinical staff. The Veteran population is aging, and a large cohort of Vietnam era Veterans is in their 60’s and 70’s. Many in this group may have behavioral or mental health concerns that require assistance from VHA clinical staff. The need for this training is due to knowledge gaps created by new and emerging geriatric mental health treatment approaches, and improvements and updates to existing care options.  

With this training, participants will be able to:

  • summarize epidemiology of and risk factors for late-life suicide;
  • identify at least three mental and physical health comorbidity profiles of older Veterans who attempt suicide following a visit in primary care or mental health; and
  • complete internal clinical checklist about risk and lethality of late-life Veteran suicide
