Dr. Anna Chodos received a 2019-2020 Hellman Family Awards

Anna Chodos, MD, MPH received a 2019-2020 Hellman Family Awards that will provide $50,000 to perform a qualitative study of ethical dilemmas in the care of adults who do not have surrogate decision-makers and who get their primary care in the San Francisco safety net. She will interview adult patients at high-risk of losing their ability to make medical decisions and who cannot identify a surrogate decision maker. This will shine light on their perspectives on the ethical challenges of caring for patients without decision-making ability.  She will also interview the medical and social service providers about their experiences and their views on ethical challenges they face when providing care to this vulnerable population.  Drs. Alexander K. Smith and Barbara Koenig will mentor her in this work.
