Elena Portacolone Awarded 5 year R01 Grant from NIA

Long-time Pepper Scholar Elena Portacolone, PhD, MBA, MPH, Associate Professor at the Institute for Health & Aging, has just been awarded a 5-year R01 grant from the National Institute on Aging for the study titled “Access and use of long-term services and supports (LTSS) for older adults living alone with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) from four racial/ethnic groups.” This study will use mixed methods to elucidate specific barriers and facilitators to access to and use of LTSS among older adults with ADRD living alone vs. those with ADRD living with others, and to compare how these barriers and facilitators may differ among racial/ethnic groups. The ultimate goal of this project is to develop federal and state policy recommendations to increase access to appropriate LTSS to older adults with ADRD, with emphasis on racial/ethnic minorities and those living alone. Study sites are California and Michigan. UCSF Co-investigators are Julene K. Johnson, Kenneth Covinsky, M. Maria Glymour, Jacqueline Torres, Andrew Bindman, Carrie Graham, and Tung Nguyen. Peter Lichtenberg also joined the team as a Co-Investigator from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI.
