Michi Yukawa Appointed Acting Medical Director of SFVAHCS MACE and Geriatrics Consultation Services

We are pleased to announce that Michi Yukawa MD, MPH, has been selected as the Acting Medical Director of the Mobile Acute Care for Elders (MACE) and Geriatrics Consultation Inpatient Services at San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS).

Dr. Yukawa completed medical school and internal medicine residency at Brown University, received a Master's in Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health, and completed a Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at the University of Washington.  She was a member of the Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine at the University of Washington from 2000-2010 before we were fortunate to recruit her to the UCSF Division of Geriatrics.  Dr. Yukawa is a UCSF Professor of Medicine with extensive leadership experience, including a decade serving as the Medical Director of the SFVAHCS Community Living Center and she is currently the Post Acute Care Medical Director at the Jewish Home & Rehabilitation Center. She also continues to provide expert Geriatrics consultations on SFVAHCS MACE and Geriatrics Consultation Inpatient Services.

In addition to her passion for practicing Geriatric Medicine and improving the quality of care for older people, Dr. Yukawa is passionate about medical education. Because of her excellence in education, she was selected as a UCSF School of Medicine Bridges Coach for UCSF medical students and most recently she was selected as the inaugural Site Director for the Family & Community Medicine (FCM) Residency Program at SFVAHCS. The FCM interns are slated to begin rotations at SFVAHCS in June 2026, including rotations on MACE and Geriatrics Consultation Inpatient Services. She also has led popular medical student and interprofessional student electives and many students have conducted high-impact quality improvement projects with her mentorship. In 2025, Dr. Yukawa was selected into the prestigious Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators.

All these accomplishments are a testament to how fortunate we are that she is now the Acting Medical Director of MACE and Geriatrics Consultation Inpatient Services. We have launched a national search for the permanent Medical Director of MACE and Geriatrics Consultation Inpatient Services and will soon be reaching out to folks to serve on this search committee. Please let me and Andreana Ososki know if you would like to be on this search committee.
