Mitchel Erickson Explores Innovative Geriatric Care Model in the UK

Mitchel Erickson, DNP, recently visited the Older Person’s Assessment and Liaison (OPAL) Unit in Harlow, Essex, UK (April 2–3, 2026) to learn about their innovative model for caring for older adults. The program is designed to direct patients to the most appropriate care setting while providing comprehensive, wraparound services.

A central component is a 16-bed unit within Princess Alexandra Hospital, located near the Emergency Department and Same Day Urgent Care. Staffed by a multidisciplinary team—including physicians, advanced practice clinicians, therapists, pharmacy, and palliative care specialists—the unit helps redirect appropriate patients from the ED to more tailored care.

Mitchel also met with leadership, including the CMO, and visited affiliated programs such as a community hospital, Hospital at Home, and regional triage and palliative care services. He noted the system’s strong integration and coordination across care settings, as well as its potential to inform similar approaches in the United States.
