Welcome Olivia Bernal!
This week we are excited to welcome Dr. Olivia Bernal to the UCSF Division of Geriatrics faculty starting on November 1, 2024. Dr. Bernal completed her MD and MPH at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and her residency in Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview before coming to UCSF. In 2023 she received the Geriatrics Fellow of the Year award from the UCSF Internal Medicine residents for her outstanding resident teaching and collaboration and in 2024 she completed her Integrated Geriatrics and Palliative Care Fellowship at UCSF. She enjoys providing longitudinal primary care for older adults and will be joining our clinician educator faculty as an attending physician in a new wing of the UCSF Center for Geriatric Care, which will be based at 1600 Divisadero for the first year and ultimately based at UCSF-St. Mary’s. During her fellowship, Dr. Bernal collaborated with Internal Medicine chief residents to conduct a needs assessment survey of our Internal Medicine residents to understand their perceived competency in core Geriatrics topics and then helped design a Geriatrics curriculum for the residents during their core block curriculum. She also attended leadership courses and wants to use these skills to influence change that improves the care of older adults. This includes sharing her passion for Geriatrics with her primary and specialty care colleagues and trainees to help “geriatricize” all medical care for older persons. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Olivia Bernal to the UCSF Division of Geriatrics faculty!
