Dr. Lauren Hunt and colleagues published an article in JAGS
Lauren Hunt, PhD, RN, FNP, Sean Morrison, MD, Siqi Gan, Edie Espejo, Katherine Ornstein, PhD, John Boscardin, PhD, and Alex Smith, MD, MPH, MS, published an article in JAGS entitled, “Incidence of potentially disruptive medical and social events in older adults with and without dementia.” Using data from the Health and Retirement study, we found that community-dwelling older adults with dementia had higher age-adjusted incidence rates of pneumonia and hip fractures compared to those without dementia, while differences in widowhood rates were not statistically significant. This knowledge can help aid anticipatory guidance and care planning for the growing population of community-dwelling older adults with dementia.
