Janice Schwartz, MD with UCLA colleagues Mimi Tarn, MD, PhD, and Kevin Shih, PhD published focus group analyses on reasons for non-adherence with oral anticoagulation with apixaban in with patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.  Patients listed cost, bleeding, lack of symptoms, thinking it was safe to skip doses, confusion about and wanting measurable effects, incomplete and discordant physician-patient communication as reasons for primary and secondary non-adherence.
