Daniel Pound Featured in NEJM Video

Daniel Pound, MD is passionate about understanding each patient’s life story and providing individualized care to older adults. Over the course of his 30-year career at UCSF, he taught medical students during home visits, sharing insights gained from his work in geriatric primary care.

To highlight the importance of high-value, patient-centered care for older adults, the New England Journal of Medicine approached Dr. Pound about creating an educational video featuring his work. What initially seemed like a simple project ultimately required extensive coordination. Teams across Family and Community Medicine, Geriatrics, UCSF Public Affairs, and the Institute on Aging worked through numerous logistical and administrative steps to make filming possible.

In September, the Vox video team spent two full days capturing Dr. Pound teaching students and caring for patients. Filming took place just weeks before his final day teaching medical students in late 2025. He retired in January and returned to UCSF part-time in March. He now sees patients in both clinic and home settings (without students) and focuses his teaching efforts on curriculum development for future UCSF learners.

The video was released last week on the New England Journal of Medicine website and on YouTube. Dr. Pound is proud of the patients, students, and staff who participated, and he is deeply grateful for the philanthropic support, colleagues, and staff who made his career possible.
