Welcome Dr. Maryanne Kim, PharmD, PhD to the team!

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Maryanne Kim to the Division of Geriatrics as our new NIH T32 Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Dr. Kim obtained her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Health Science from Seoul National University, where her dissertation focused on the economic impact assessment of future drug price reduction policies and the analysis of online postings on medication misuse using natural language processing techniques. She has also conducted significant research on the misuse of medications like methylphenidate, providing valuable insights into patient behavior and policy implications. Dr. Kim’s academic journey and dedication to tackling complex healthcare challenges reflect her commitment to advancing pharmaceutical sciences and improving patient care.

Dr. Kim brings a wealth of experience in analyzing large-scale datasets, including health claims data, social media data, and surveys, with proficiency in Python, R, and SAS. Her current research includes validating the revised Patient Attitudes to Deprescribing (rPATD) questionnaire within the Korean healthcare system and examining risk factors influencing the progression from mild cognitive impairment to dementia. In her new role working closely with Dr. Mike Steinman, Dr. Kim will be working on studies aimed at improving appropriate medication use among older adults, including deprescribing. She will also attend certification and training courses on the responsible conduct of research via CTSI and participate in seminars specific to aging research fellows hosted by the UCSF Division of Geriatrics. In addition to her technical skills, Dr. Kim’s collaborative spirit and innovative approach to problem-solving are well-aligned with our division’s goals. Her methodological expertise and commitment to improving patient outcomes through data-driven, evidence-based insights will be invaluable to our division.

We are excited to have Dr. Kim on board and look forward to her contributions to our research on optimizing medication use among patients with dementia and other vulnerable populations. Dr. Kim can be reached at Maryanne.Kim@ucsf.edu and you may run into her at both our VA and Mission Bay Offices. Please introduce yourself and make her feel welcome to the team!
