Lab Overview:

The PREPARE for Your Care (PREPARE) Research Lab

Our research focuses on aging, health literacy, health disparities, developing and testing tools to facilitate health communication and informed medical decision making, especially for historically marginalized older adults. For example, we designed and tested easy-to-read advance directives and modified informed consent procedures for older adults with limited health literacy and limited English proficiency which have been adopted nationally. In addition, we helped develop an expanded advance care planning (ACP) paradigm that shifts the focus from the pre-specification of life-prolonging procedures to preparing patients and caregivers for communication and informed medical decision making.

The PREPARE for Your Care Program

PREPARE for Your Care is an easy-to-use, online, secure, advance care planning (ACP) program that uses video stories and easy-to-read advance directives to help people make medical decisions based on their values, both now and in the future. ACP helps people have a voice in their healthcare, name a trusted person to make medical decisions in case of an emergency, and to prepare for medical decision making.
